The main sight in Batalha is the Dominican Abbey which was constructed in memory of the great battle in Alujbarrota that was fought in 1385.  The construction of the abbey Santa Maria da Vitória commenced in 1388 and was later added to and enhanced by various Portuguese kings over the next 2 centuries.  The abbey is one of Europe’s greatest gothic masterpieces and is protected as a World Heritage Monument.

The statue outside the southern façade of the Abbey is of Nuno Alvares Pereira, the commander at the battle of Alujbarrota for King João 1, on his horse.

Within the chapterhouse are the tombs of 2 unknown World War 1 soldiers.
