April 2011

Week Fourteen

It was a very hot week weather wise, with the weather warming up it is time to reinstall our water pipes which we took in for the winter. Our water supply comes from a very large and deep concrete storage tank which is filled from an underground supply that runs all through the year giving us a continuous supply of water.

The nets put up for the bunnies and mice are only working on the rabbits, the mice seem to find there way through no matter what!

Plenty of transplanting being done this week mostly tomatoes, courgettes and lettuce.

Week Fifteen

More sunny days this week and its getting hotter. With the heat on the increase it is time for us to change our working hours, we need to avoid working in the afternoon heat so we now plan to start our day at around 7.30am when its cooler, through to around lunch time as the exhausting heat is from midday to late afternoon, we will then go back to work until early evening if needed.

We left the wheel barrow in the poly and the inner tube burst in the heat! We gave the wheel to the local garage who replaced and fitted the new tube for 7.50 euros - bargain!!

We have a guy who comes to the farm each year to cut and collect the willow growing on our 4 trees. He makes baskets  and furniture and in exchange for our willow this year he gave us a hand woven shopping basket, it’s really well made and will be perfect when collecting produce grown on the farm.

Week Sixteen

Wow what a change in the weather from baking heat to almost a week of thunder storms and very welcome ( to us ) rain. We did get some work on the land done but not that much. Some transplanting of seedlings in the polys was also done .

As the weather was against us we had  lots of time to make cakes which we enjoy doing. With Easter coming soon it is good practice for our  “casa45 Easter Event”

Week Seventeen

Our elderly neighbour Antonio brought over a bag of goodies once again, it included a large amount of broad beans which we grow too but Nik sat at the table in the sun and removed them from the pods then popped them in the freezer. He also gave us a large bag of dried runner beans which we also have loads of but we have sowed some of them in a row near our English runners, it will be good to compare them when ready.

As the weather had improved slightly, plenty of strimmimg was done, the plants love this wet then sunny cycle we are going through but so does the grass and weeds. We like to keep some areas long for wild grasses and flowers but anything near the planting areas need to be kept under stricter control.

Planting out of tomatoes and tomatillos was completed before more heavy rain due falls, this will settle them in quickly.
